Cool Projects #48

I like finding those films, that normally fly under your radar, and turn out to be solid movies.  That's definitely the case with Noseeums this latest film I was given the opportunity to screen.

Noseeums (Torchlight Studios and Odin's Eye Entertainment) brings us Ember,  a college student portrayed by a very talented Aleigha Burt, joins her friends on a trip to a lake house in the south.  Throught the journey to, and and early stages on the retreat, Ember, a black woman, is indirectly reminded by her "well do to" white friends of their cultural differences.

On top of the underlying social messages, there also glimpses into an ominous past of the land, owned by one of her acquaintances. Ember starts to feel a connection with the area history through frightening visions of a darker time in our country's history, where many black land owners would have their property literally stolen, and be forced off their land.

This all ties in with the visions Ember is having which I don't wanna spoil anything, as I encourage you to track this one down. Especially if you're into a good thriller, reminiscent of Jordan Peele's work, with a nice slightly gory ending....very satifying.

That said, I did enjoy this watch. Noseeums, though not a perfect film, is very well presented by a talented group of performers who I wasn't familiar with including the aforementioned Aleigha Burt, Tabitha Getsy, Trisha Arozqueta, Jasmine Nguyen, Jessie Roddy, Tyler Bibb, Chase Johnson and C.P. Walker.

What really stood out was how well directed and shot the film was. Raven DeShay Carter knocks it out of the park with this debut, and I really think that given the right project, they could become a household name. Keep an eye out for Noseeums and any future work from Carter

Personally I take in my movies for entertainment purposes, so when there is a social message kinda forced on us, it takes me out of the film. Nothing against that, but movies are my escape from the sometimes awful world. Noseeums does not do that. There is a message and lesson here but it's crafted so well within this thrilling film that it worked well for me.

This film debuted at Fright Fest in the UK this past weekend, to nice reviews. Be sure to keep and eye out for it to start rolling out to a wider audience soon!
