Pretty Good Week: Star Wars Edition

This may have been the best week for movie going in a long time. I believe I've seen the years best two films, both being sequels to some childhood favorite franchises.

Creed! I grew up loving the Rocky movies! I can't even count the numerous times I'd watch Sly Stallone overcome the odds to come out on top. And who didn't always be pumped up and ready to take on anyone or anything after Rocky conquered the unbeatable giant Russian, or whooped the young cocky champ in an alley? I'm not condoning violence and fighting, but these were one of my favorite film series' growing up.

This newest film tells the story of Apollo Creed's son following in his dad's footsteps, and calling on Rocky to train him, while in the midst of his own battle with illness. Inspirational to say the least! Excellent movie, that I absolutely recommend, and expect to see lots of attention during award season!

I Can't even begin to convey my excitement I felt and still feel about Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Here's me trying...

Pretty Good Week...

This week was pretty uneventful other than catching a couple movies in the theatre and finally finishing Daredevil.

For some reason , I wanted to see the Victor Frankenstein movie. You know, the one starring Harry Potter (Danielle Radcliffe) as Igor and young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) as Dr. Frankenstein. I've always been a fan of the classic monster stories, so I had to see this latest take on Frankenstein...I gotta say, it was pretty meh...I feel McAvoy tried too hard to put his take on Victor Frankenstein, and it felt completely overacted, and Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) acting talent was wasted on Igor. Visually, the movie was nice to look at, but the script bored me. And ***spoiler alert*** how did Frankenstein become a ninja so he can kill his creation? He spent the whole movie drunk and psychotic trying to play God, then bam, warrior! I dislike posting negatively, but I also hate being bored! There was a bright spot though, in the actress who played Lorelei, Jessica Brown Findlay. I expect to see her shine in GOOD movies in the not too distant future! I spent entirely too much time talking about that movie!

The disappointing film is ok though, because I watched Krampus as well. I'll admit that my expectations were a bit lower with this one, but whoa! It was surprisingly creepy and hilarious at the same time! I'm not overly familiar with the Krampus mythology, but this take on it was very well thought out and enhanced with the intereting plot turns and humor. Krampus was well casted for what it was...loved it...such a fun movie that should become a cult holiday classic! Go see it this holiday season!

Staying on the holiday topic, be sure to go back and look at the interesting projects we've shared. You might find some unique gift ideas: Check it out

I did finally finish Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix. I kind of put it off for a while because it started off so good that I hated the idea of finishing the season so fast! Season two is gonna be so good! I'm really looking forward to the introduction of the Punished, played by Jon Bernthal! Now I'm on to Jessica Jones, and so far, it's fantastic. David Tennant is terrifying as Kilgrave! Hats off to Marvel and Netflix on the great shows, and some of the best villains in the MCU!

That's my week in a nutshell. Stay tuned and keep on sharing. Were almost to 1000 followers on Twitter, so that means a giveaway once we make that milestone. www.Twitter.com/thestevestrout

Cool Projects #3

Ok, since these "Cool Projects" postings are becoming a regular thing, Let make it an official www.thestevestrout.com featured series. This group of awesome will be #3...Check out, enjoy, support, and share Cool Projects #3...
I literally just found out about this Lost Hope web series from our friend Vince Caso, who is best known for his role as Bladezz on Felicia Day's The Guild...The series, created by Jeff Saamanen, Natalie Harvey, and Myke Allen, is described as a cross between Archer and Battlestar Galactica! This trailer, introducing some of the characters was enough to get me not only intrigued, but pretty excited for Lost Hope.

There will be a Lost Hope Kickstarter starting in January so hopefully you can help get this show off the ground. For more info check out www.losthope.tv ...Be on the lookout for a Q&A with Vince Caso too!

www.sukottostudios.com
Next up we have Sukotto. A Martial Arts/Supernatural action packed comic series, already on its 5th issue, with the 6th on its way. If your a regualar here at the site, you were introduced to the series early on in our interview with the comic creator, Scott Adams. This self published book is selling out at comic shops, and since it just went full color, it's going to only get better., so if your into ninjas, and demons, and ninjas kicking demon ass, then you will dig this. Go back and have a look at the interview with Scott, if you missed it HERE, and be sure to like the Sukotto Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/sukottostudios/

Ringside #1 cover courtesy of imagecomics.com

This comic isn't an indie book like a lot of the stuff we've been pushing, but Ringside has a place in my heart. I've been a pro wrestling fan off and on all my life. It's one of the earliest things I recall geeking out about (along with Star Wars and Comics), so I was really excited when I heard about this series, about the violence and drama in and out of the ring in the pro wrestling business. The series has been in the works for a while with writer Joe Keatinge, but it finally came into fruition when he connected with the perfect artist for Ringside, in Nick Barber. I had the chance to talk to Joe and Nick about Ringside a couple months back (Click here to read). Ringside is published monthly by Image Comics with issue 2 being published later this month. I really think it's worth checking out, if not as a wrestling fan, but for Keatinge's writing and Nick Barber's artwork! These guys should be household names in no time.

Take a look at my friend's chainmail work too. This stuff makes awesome gifts. Very unique and beautiful art! Go check out her shop at Www.scarlettstreasure.etsy.com

That'll do it for this round. Don't forget, we're doing a giveaway once we hit 1000 followers on Twitter, so go follow and tell your friends... @thestevestrout

Cool Projects #2

I enjoy sharing awesome projects with my followers, so here's a few more projects I dig. If you take a few minutes to check them out, you might too...These would probably make great gifts for the nerd in your life!!!

We all have our favorite superoes, and there have been hundreds of great ones over the years. You'll be surprised how many terrible superheroes were created throughout comic history. In Jon Morris' book The League Of Regrettable Superheroes, he collects and shares his commentary on dozens of the most ridiculous and obscure characters in comic book history. This is a fantastic and hilarious book worth checking out. More info is available at: /www.quirkbooks.com/book/league-regrettable-superheroes

Next on the list is for the fantasy and horror folks is from our friend, and one of our favorite artists, CD Poe. He created a coloring book for the grown ups in a tame version and a NSFW version. This is a nice collection of his signature styled fantasy/monster/pinup girl art that's gained him a following on the NW "Geek Convention" scene. Grab a copy of the coloring book (it's 20 awesome pages of his line work) and check out more of his spooky art work at www.cdpoe.storenvy.com/collections/1201818-coloring-book. I'm partial to his Tennage Mutant Ninja Turtles tribute piece. Go look!

Velocidad is a great Sci-Fi space action adventure so wonderfully created by Northwest guy Kasey Quevedo, that I find it hard to believe that this guy or the comic is only a web comic, and hasn't been snatched up by a top publisher. The ongoing story is very well written, and I absolutely love the bold, straight forward artwork, that could tell the story on it's own. Go read it for FREE at  www.velocidad-comic.com

Stay tuned for us to share other great work as it comes along, and be sure to keep spreading the word about www.thestevestrout.com ...We're really close to 1000 followers on Twitter, so be sure to follow, because once we hit that milestone we will be doing a nice giveaway featuring some signed items. Thanks, all!

Q&A with Mitch Kosterman, Producer of the Supernatural Fandom Movie

I don't know how many of our readers are Supernatural fans, but I love the show. It has a lot of personal meaning to me. I know I've mentioned the tough last couple years I've had, but in some weird way, this television show (along with my beloved Walking Dead) has taught me a lot about perseverance and overcoming odds and obstacles in life. Feel free to message me and ask any time.

Anyways, the fandom for this show is unbelievable, and so tight knit that this film project myself and producer Mitch Kosterman discuss in this Q&A HAD TO BE MADE!

Q&A With Award Winning Sci Fi Author and SDCC Co-founder, Greg Bear

My little town had a visit recently from renowned sci-fi author and one of the founding members of the San Diego Comic Con, Greg Bear. The Key City Public Theatre presented a reading of some of Mr. Bear's work (which was brilliantly performed by a KCPT cast member). It was a nice evening of some sci-fi storytelling, as well as old and new friends. I connected with Greg Bear and set up this Q&A you're about to read. I highly recommend digging in to some of his writings such as , Eon, Star Wars: Rogue Planet, and Blood Music.

Q&A With Cosplayer and Model, Ireland Reid

If you're a regular visitor to the site, you know that I'm a big supporter of cosplayers and the cosplay community, so I'm really happy to share this Q&A I did with my friend Ireland Reid. She's not only a fantastic cosplayer, and stunning model, and supporter of mine, but she's a really funny down to earth person, and I adore the fact that she has no filter (you'll see). If you ever run in to her at a convention, be sure to say hi! For now, enjoy our Q&A...

What was your first cosplay or costume?
I’ve been in costumes since I can remember as I was always in drama and theater in school. So I have been an Christmas Elf, Rabbit, etc (way to many to list man)

Who or what inspired you to cosplay?
I have forever been bored with normal life attire

It's been a pretty quiet week for me, but I started the weekend off checking out the Peanuts movie! I grew up reading the comic strips and the holiday specials were yearly traditions.

Pretty good week...

Had a busy week at the ol' day job, but gotta pay the bills. Basically spent the week buzzing from the great weekend at Jet City Comic Show. The awesome nerdiness carried over to this weekend with a big movie release, in Spectre, and mingling with more renowned sci-fi and fantasy authors..

Interview With Doug Jones

If you're a fan of sci-fi, fantasy, or comic book related movies or television, there's a pretty good chance you've seen Doug Jones perform and don't even know it.

I'm personally a huge fan of not only his work, but Doug as a person. I had the opportunity to chat with Mr. Jones this week about the newly released CRIMSON PEAK film (which I thought was fantastic), other amazing roles, and how he is so endearing to fans. Enjoy and share are latest with Doug Jones.

Galacticon weekend...

I don't know if you may or may not have followed the happenings surrounding last weekends Galacticon, but it got kind of messy. Galacticon was to be a celebration of the Battlestar Galactica franchise.

Galacticon Preview: Interview with Tahmoh Penikett

I was given the opportunity to cover Galacticon for www.thestevestrout.com later this month. Galacticon is a celebration of the epic science fiction franchise , Battlestar Galactica. I absolutely loved the series, and made me a fan of many of the actors and actresses from the cast. I had the priveledge of having a great phone conversation with one of my favorite cast members, Tahmoh Penikett.

Tahmoh is not only known for his portrayal of Helo Agathon on the BSG series, but many other great characters from some cult classic shows like Joss Whedon's Dollhouse and one of my personal favorites, Supernatural, where he played the Angel Gadreel.

Please enjoy and share my interview with Tahmoh Penikett!!

Guest post from our friend, Jen Irwin: WW Sacramento Comic Con

My Wizard World Sacramento experience.

I had originally thought my whole trip was going to be scrapped because I didn't make enough chainmaille sales (www.scarlettstreasure.etsy.com)  for spending money to do anything, or even get lunch! I had made one big sale but my husband got into a car accident and couldn't work that day so I put it into our bank account to make up the money he would have made that day.

Anglicon, PNWSFX and more...

Anglicon, a convention featuring Doctor Who and other British media made its return to Seattle after an extended hiatus to a great response...We have a handful of great shots from the show.

Before we get to those, I'd like to mention PNSWFX. PNWSFX is a little group I'm involved in. We basically build and craft props and collectibles for everyone from cosplayer to fanboy/girl and more. We happen to specialize in building "TARDIS themed" items. We had just been happening to finish up a couple pieces that were perfect to show to the Anglicon audience. The convention was gracious enough to set us up a table, and I'm pretty sure the attendees liked us.

The most exciting part of it all was getting a PNWSFX group photo with the guest of honor, Colin Baker, better known as the Sixth Doctor! He even let us bring our box in the photo, and yes he loved our work.

The Sixth Doctor with our cabinet and the PNWSFX crew!

This was my first time meeting any of theDoctors, and as a Doctor Who Fan , it was pretty exciting! I checked out Colin's panel, and he was very entertaining, wise, and hilarious. He gave great answers to all the fan questions, and talked about other projects like appearances on Star Trek Continues (Vic Mignogna's web series which continues the Star Trek Original Series mission). One this that really stood out to me from his panel was a bit of advice he shared as follows: "You only get one bite of this grapefruit called life, so make it a big bite!"-Colin Baker...Basically, make your life matter. Set and achieve your goals. Aim high. Follow Mr. Baker on Twitter too : @sawboneshex

Hopefully you can find the time to check out PNWSFX (www.pnwsfx.com), and maybe we can do some work for you! Check out a few pics from the con...

Our buddy from Crypticon Seattle, Alfred came by the table to hang out a bit!. It's always nice running into familiar faces at conventions! Good seeing ya, Alfred!

I seem to keep running into this Dalek at shows too!

As if one Dalek isn't enough! EXTERMINATE!!

Our friend and PNWSFX teammate, Haylee Trocone as the Tenth Doctor!
This was one of the coolest damn things I've ever seen! DON'T BLINK!

Great costume, Capt. Jack

Lots of smiling faces at Anglicon! Hope to see more next year if they'll have us back!

I'm hoping to dig up more pictures for your viewing pleasure. This was a fun con and I hope it grows into something special. For now, keep spreading the word about www.thestevestrout.com and our affiliates (Haylee and PNWSFX). Thanks to Michael Beckman for a few of the photos. Next show I will be at is Galacticon. A celebration of Battlestar Galactica! Very excited to see some old friends there!

Interview with iZombie creator, Chris Roberson

To celebrate a readership milestone here at www.thestevestrout.com and with the inagural season of CW's newest hit show, iZombie coming to a close tonight (June 9th) I set up an extra special Q&A session with one of the creators of the DC/Vertigo comic series that spawned the show, and part owner of the great indie comic publishing company, Monkeybrain Comics, and award winning writer, Mr. Chris Roberson...hope you all enjoy and keep spreading the word and supporting this site.

Since the debut of the CW network show based on the comics is gaining popularity, I'm going to jump right in with the I Zombie questions ...

-Are you and Mike Allred, one of my personal favorite comic artists, involved in the creative aspect of the show in any way?

I like to say that we are informed, not involved. The producers have kept us in the look at each stage of the process, but aside from Mike contributing the art for the opening title sequence, neither of us has been involved in a creative capacity.

-What were your initial thoughts when the deal was made to produce the television show?

I was all for the idea! When iZombie was originally pitched to Vertigo, even before Mike was attached as co-creator, I thought that the concept had the potential to work in other media. It’s heartening to know that I was right!

-As a fan of the comics and tv show, I am really impressed how well the comics have adapted to the small screen. Do you feel like the network is doing the books justice?

I usually describe the TV series as the Earth-2 version of our comic (or rather, our comic as the Earth-2 version of the TV show): it has the same title and basic concept, but otherwise it is its own thing. So our plucky zombie heroine is the Jay Garrick to the Barry Allen of the TV show. And yes, absolutely, I think they’re doing a fantastic job with that idea!

-As for the comic series, was it DC/Vertigo that decided to end the series, or was it a creator decision?

It was ultimately cancelled due to declining sales, which is unfortunately the fate of the vast majority of new titles these days. But we had time to tell the story that we wanted to tell.

-Were the plans to end the comic series in place before the CW got the ball rolling on the show?

I’m not sure when the folks at DC and Warner TV were first talking about the idea of taking iZombie to TV in general principle, but the first I heard about Rob Thomas being brought onboard to develop it for adaptation was about a year after the comic wrapped up.

-Back to writing...Does your approach differ when doing the writing for comics, versus novels and short stories?

Yes! And differs from project to project, too!

-Eisner Award nominations...New York Times best selling author...multiple awards...The list goes on...What do you feel is your biggest accolade as a writer?

As it stands? Probably being the co-creator of a comic that inspired a TV show that a bunch of people are enjoying!

-What are you working on as of late?

I’m doing a lot of really cool projects for Dark Horse Comics that have not been announced yet. I’m keeping busy!

-Now that a project you've created is being brought to our tv screens, has any of your other writings been looked at for potential television or movies?

Oh, sure. iZombie was just the first one not to fall at some hurdle or other.

-Tell me a bit about your publishing company, Monkeybrain Comics? It's to my understanding that Monkeybrain titles have recently starting going to print to go along with the digital format you initially distributed?

Yes, Monkeybrain Comics is a digital comics imprint that I started with my wife Allison Baker in 2012. Digital versions of our titles can be purchased through ComiXology and read on computers, phones, and tablets, and print editions of some titles have been released by a number of different publishers, including IDW, Dark Horse, and Image Comics.

-Outside of Monkeybrain titles, who or what are you reading nowadays (comic book or novels)?

The “Mignolaverse” titles (Hellboy, BPRD, etc) are perennial favorites, as is Astro City, Atomic Robo, and The Sixth Gun. I’m loving The Wicked + The Divine, The Autumnlands, and the new Star Wars titles that Marvel is publishing, and I’m really looking forward to the 8House anthology that Brandon Graham is putting together.
V

-I feel like I've used enough of your time, so as I always like to end my interview, I'd like to "open up the floor to you". Is there anything you'd like to share? Any advice you can give to aspiring writers or comic creators?

Don’t give up your dreams. Unless your dreams are stupid. In which case you should probably find better dreams.

IZombie airs on the CW network Tuesday night's. Be sure to go find the Vertigo/DC comic book series back issues and check them out too. For more info on Chris Roberson check out www.chrisroberson.net. Check out his comic publisher, Monkeybrain Comics at www.monkeybraincomics.com

2015 Crypticon Seattle recap

I got a little behind on getting this posted, but here goes.

Every year I attend and cover a lot of conventions, but Crypticon is always one of my favorites. Words can't explain how fun the show is, but I hope these pictures can give you an idea of how great a convention it is. Sadly I only attended one day, but as you can see, a lot happens in one day! Enjoy!

The road trip to Crypticon with my sidekick for the day, Haylee. She cosplayed Abaddon from Supernatural. Pretty Damn good, I must say! Go follow her on Facebook. www.Facebook.com/hayleetronconecosplay

The barista called me the wrong name. I was Stew for the day 😢

I love what I do!

I always dig the hearse lineup at Crypticon!

Beetlejuice and Lydia (I think that's her name in the movie)

Great crowd this year!

Always nice chatting with Denise Crosby. She's so sweet to the fans!

The star of one of my all time favorite horror flicks, Dawn of the Dead, the one and only Ken Foree!
Checking out my buddy RJ Haddy's panel. If ya missed it a couple weeks ago, here's the interview we did: http://www.thestevestrout.com/2015/05/crypticon-preview-featuring-interview.html?m=1

This kid's costume was rad...

Nice makeup job!

I'm becoming a big fan of these two! The Soska sisters! Jen and Sylvia are two of the best in the horror biz. True artists.

Eloise Knapp! One of the best horror writers around! Go check her out. We interviewed recently http://www.thestevestrout.com/2015/05/crypticon-preview.html?m=1

Check out this beautiful broken doll makeup on the lovely http://i.instagram.com/the_mooshell/
Always nice getting to hang with my buddy, the lovely Jessica Cameron! If you don't know her you should! She's ,hands down, one of the hardest workers in the movie biz. Watch out for her latest project, Mania, to be released later this year...For now, follow her on Twitter!  Check out Jessica Cameron www.twitter.com/JessicaCameron_

More friends...comic artist and radio host Mark Rahner, and the Rev en Fuego from the BJ Shea Geek Nation podcast!

My crew at the show! I already introduced you to Haylee Troncone, so you should be following her already on her cosplay page. The other is Michael B. He takes occasional photos for us, and is almost as nice a guy as I am...

The next convention I will be at is Anglicon. It's going to be all about Doctor Who and British media! I'm really looking forward to this one because my PNWSFX (www.pnwsfx.com) crew will have a table at the show to show off some of our "tardis inspired" handy work! If your in Seattle the weekend on June 12-14th, come check it out. www.Anglicon.com for more info.
